DAMAULI, July 26

Folks from the squatters’ settlement at Bhanu VDC-5 have resorted to protest owing to the authority’s reluctance to provide them land ownership certificate, relief and quake victims’ identity cards, in Tanahun, on Sunday.

More than 100 agitating squatters picketed the offices of District Administration and Land Revenue on Sunday.

They also submitted a memorandum to Chief District Officer Mahadev Panth and land revenue officer Chhabi Lal Sharma.

They claimed that they were deprived of their right to land ownership though they had been residing in the locality for the past four decades.

“We have been more concerned as the Commission to settle the Squatters’ Problem, formed in 1995, conducted the field survey but did not provide us with the land ownership certificate even after two decades. Hence, we did not get any relief despite the collapse of our houses in the massive April 25 earthquake, due to lack of land ownership certificate,” lamented Bhim Raj Lama.

Another squatter Shankar Thapa said, “Though the monsoon has already started, we have no option but to take shelter under tarpaulin and old zinc sheets.

The agitators warned of stringent protest if they were not provided relief and quake victim identity cards at the earliest.

CDO Panth agreed that they had not provided relief to victims who were staying in state-owned and unregistered land. “After we came to learn about the squatters’ problem, we have written to the Ministry of Home Affairs for relief,” said CDO Panth.
