Stakeholders concerned about rise in rape cases

Stakeholders today expressed concern about the rise in rape incidents in the last few years in Lamjung.
Speaking at an interaction organised by District Police Office, Lamjung, stakeholders expressed serious concern about the alarming increase in rape incidents. They have asked for stern laws and punishment.
District Judge Komal Prasad Acharya said information about legal consequences and punishment for those guilty of rape should be given to the public. Women Development Officer Bishnumaya Paudel stressed the need to formulate strong laws to curb rape incidents.
DSP Padam Bahadur Bista said data at the district police office showed that rape incidents had shot up in the district. According to DSP Bista, eight rape cases were registered with the police in the current fiscal. The district had recorded 11 rape cases last year while nine cases were reported the previous year in the district.
According to police investigation, lack of awareness among parents, modernity, Facebook, Youtube, mobile phones and internet are responsible for the rise in rape incidents. “Consumption of liquor and adult films are also behind the increasing rape incidents,” DSP Bista said.
Rainas Municipality Deputy Mayor Dhan Kumari Gurung said awareness programmes should be launched in every village to prevent rape.
