Students torch symbolic ballot boxes
Baglung, January 18:
The students of Mahendra Campus in Baglung today set fire to a mock ballot box as a protest against the municipal polls scheduled for February 8.
The students will disrupt the municipal election and gherao the election office during polls, the students warned during a meeting later in the day.
President of Free Students Union (FSU) campus unit, Govind Nepali, said the students would not let the polls be successful at any cost.
Addressing the meeting, FSU vice-president Kamal Adhikari, district chairman of ANNFSU, Bhuwan Chalise, President of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) Surya Prasad Gautam, Krishna Subedi of Nepali Congress(Democratic) and Bhimsen Wanal of ANNFSU-U said the students would play a major role in disrupting the polls.
A report from Pokhara said the students of four student unions torched a symbolic ballot box in front of the main gate of Prithvi Narayan Campus in Pokhara today morning.
The student unions have also launched signature campaigns at different public schools of Lekhnath Municipality and Pokhara Sub-metropolis urging the schools not to allow polling booths on their premises.
Another report from Bara said the students affiliated to different student unions torched a symbolic cardboard ballot box at Bharchowk, Kalaiya, today, also to protest against the
municipal polls. A corner meet had followed the torched of the mock box, which was addressed by student leaders Deependra Patel, Ramakanta Shah, Rajesh Rauniyar, Lukesh Singh, Dhruba Yadav and Jawahir Ansari.
