An unidentified disease that has spread in pig farms in Saptari’s Rupani Rural Municipality-6, Birendra Bazaar is yet to be contained.

According to pig farmers, the unknown disease has so far claimed 61 pigs.“The toll from the disease was 43 two days ago, but has now reached 61,” said Kulanand Prasad Chaudhary, owner of one of the pig farms affected by the disease.

“The pigs afflicted by the disease salivate unnecessarily, are feverish and shiver and die just a few hours later,” said Chaudhary, adding he has suffered loss to the tune of 1 million rupees due to deaths caused by the unknown disease.

Regarding the mysterious outbreak, government authorities concerned are carrying out the required study to confirm the disease.

“As a team from the Rajbiraj-based Livestock Expert Centre has collected blood samples, the disease can only be confirmed and treatment started once the report is out,” said Livestock Expert Centre Saptari Chief Fulgen Yadav.
