Tatopani customs point shut

Sindhupalchowk, February 16:

The Tatopani customs point was closed again today due to a strike over the identity card system to enter Tibet.

The customs point was closed after 10 different trade organisations blocked it saying that the ID card system was impractical. The agitation has been launched after ID cards were issued to only those people who are residing near the border, president of the Trans Himalayan Trade Association, Durga Bahadur Shrestha, said.

Meanwhile, talks are scheduled at the immigration office here tomorrow to try to solve the problem, the association stated. The strike will continue unless the import-export business from the point was made easier, Chandra Bahadur Sherpa, a member of the association, said. The government collects a revenue worth Rs 5 million a day at the customs point.
