Taxi drivers halt traffic in capital

Kathmandu, June 5:

Taxi drivers today organised chakkajam at different parts of the city. They were demanding action against persons involved in two different cases including the murder of a taxi driver on Sunday night.

The chakkajam was jointly organised by the Nepal Taxi Divers Association (NTDA) and the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Transport Workers Association (ANTWA).

NTDA president Jagan Nath Gautam said they organised a chakkajam at Kamal Pokhari because the police failed to arrest Rose Rana, who thrashed a taxi driver at Gyaneswor on Sunday. “We had given a 24-hour ultimatum to the police to arrest Rana but in vain,” he said. “Later a representative of Rana held talks with the drivers and agreed to provide Rs 20,000 to the driver and produce Rana at the police station within five days,” he said.

Taxi drivers also blocked traffic at major junctions of the city, including Balaju, Kalanki, Sinamangal and Tripureswor for some three hours from10:30 am.

The drivers demanded compensation to family members of a taxi driver Shyam Lama, who was killed on Sunday night.
