Tharus threaten to intensify agitation

Tharuhat/Tharuwan Struggle Committee, which has been agitating against the provisions of the new constitution, today said that if its demands were not met before January 14, it would promulgate its own constitution on January 15 guaranteeing autonomous Tharuhat province.

Issuing a press release here today, the committee said from January 15 it would allow movement of vehicles only if they carried sticker with the slogan of Tharuhat Autonomous Province.
The committee also threatened to block the entry of what it called anti-Tharuhat/Tharuwan province leaders into Tharuhat areas.
It also decided to hold a mass meeting in Tikapur of Kailali district between the mid-January to mid-February. The committee demanded that ‘false cases’ against its cadres be withdrawn.
The committee also warned that it would counter the government’s month-long campaign to create awareness about the provisions of the new constitution saying that such a campaign was aimed at misleading the public.
The committee threatened to intensify its stir if the government did not address its demands by amending the constitution.
