Birgunj, November 10

District Traffic Police, Parsa, has banned e-rickshaws that were operating without licence, in Birgunj from yesterday.

Traffic Police Inspector at the District Traffic Police Office Arjun Bhatta said that as many as 274 e-rickshaws were taken under control yesterday and today.

Meanwhile, e-rickshaw operators have been protesting the ban. The operators have demanded that Chief District Officer Keshab Raj Ghimire allow operation of rickshaws until November 23, when they will submit applications for licence.

More than 900 e-rickshaws are reportedly operating in Birgunj.

Local shopkeeper Dharma Nath Sarraf said the move of the traffic police was commendable. “The e-rickshaws were operating haphazardly,” he added.

SP Raju Babu Shrestha said that police had taken the move as per the directive from higher authorities. “We have taken the decision to avoid possible accidents,” he added.
