Two killed, eight injured as police van turns turtle

Rautahat, June 25

Two detainees were killed and eight others, including six police personnel, were injured when a police van met with an accident at Balchanpur of Chandrapur Municipality in Rautahat today.

Rautahat Superintendent of Police Bhupendra Bahadur Khatri identified the deceased as Nirmal Sah, 20, and Ramesh Kumar Chaudhary, 40. The van bound for Gaur from Chandrapur had turned turtle after the vehicle’s tyres went flat, said SP Khatri.

Critically injured Sah and Chaudhary died while being rushed to Birgunj for treatment. Sah and Chaudhary had been in custody on a drug case for investigation.

Critically injured police constables Hari Kishor Chaudhary and Ajay Yadav were sent to Birgunj for treatment. Van driver ASI Dipesh Chaulagain, head constables Umesh Yadav, Binod Mandal, constable Sanjiv Karki, detainees Kumar Gelal and Tek Bahadur Tamang sustained minor injuries in the accident. They are being treated at Chandrapur Hospital, said SP Khatri.

It is learnt that the accident occurred when the four detainees were being taken to the Office of the District Attorney for remand.

Investigation is under way and all four detainees are in police custody at Area Police Office, Chandranigahapur, according to police.
