Victims complain of unfair relief distribution
Gaighat, July 26
Udayapur flood victims today said Province 1 government did not distribute relief materials in a fair manner.
Belaka Municipality and Rautamai Rural Municipality of the district were badly affected by floods on July 12 and 13. But flood victims of these areas are saying that the provincial government distributed more relief materials to the people of Tapli and Lingchungbung rural municipalities, which were less affected by the floods.
Floods on July 12 and 13 had displaced 10 families of Tapli and Lingchungbung rural municipalities and the provincial government provided seven quintals of rice, salt, pulses and other items through helicopter yesterday.
On the contrary, only a few non-governmental organisations distributed relief materials to hundreds of flood victims and displaced families of Belaka Municipality and Rautamai Rural Municipality.
“Many families have been displaced by floods in my rural municipality. No relief has been provided by the government. It has completely neglected us,” said Chair Gajendra Khadka of Rautamai Rural Municipality.
Udayapur Chief District Officer Dhruba Khadka said the provincial government had distributed relief to flood victims. Khadka said relief was distributed via helicopter in Tapli and Lingchungbung rural municipalities as the roads connecting these local levels were obstructed due to floods. “It is very difficult to reach local levels on foot,” said CDO Khadka.
