UDMF cadres demonstrate in Rautahat, smear soot on UML's advisor's face

RAUTAHAT: Cadres of United Democratic Madhesi Front have been demonstrating in the district headquarters Gaur and Garuda Municipality on the first day of two-day general strike called to protest yesterday's fatal police firing in neighbouring Saptari district.

Hundreds of UDMF supporters have taken to streets, burning tyres and obstructing the roads. They have demanded action against those responsible for the casualties besides status of martyr to those killed.

Education institutes and businesses remained close today, while the government offices also have been affected by the strike.

Security personnel have been deputed to the government facilities and major junctions in the district, according to SP Yagya Binod Pokharel at the District Police Office.

But no unpleasant incident has been reported till this afternoon, he claimed.

UML advisor soot-smeared

Earlier in the morning the UDMF cadres had smeared soot on the face of Mani Shankar Nidhi, the district advisor of CPN-UML, at BP Chok.

Nidhi claimed that a group of around two dozen people attacked him with an intent to kill him. According to him, his eyes have been badly hurt by burnt Mobil oil that the attackers poured on his head.
