UML boss intensifies meeting with Indian leaders
NEW DELHI: Visiting CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal intensified his meetings with Indian leaders today.
He met India's National Security Advisor MK Narayanan, INC leader Dr Karan Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party chairman Rajnath Singh and general secretary Arun Jaitley and senior leader Dr Murli Manohar Joshi of the same party separately.
According to CPN-UML politburo member Arun Nepal, Narayanan said the logical conclusion of the peace process without delay was important for Nepal as it could put the country on the path of peace and prosperity. Narayanan also expressed hope that the political stakeholders of Nepal would be able to bury their differences and forge a broader consensus in order to resolve current political problems, according to Nepal.
Earlier, talking to The Himalayan Times, Khanal said almost all the leaders were of the view that Nepal should end the political deadlock by forging a national consensus in order to bring the peace process to a logical conclusion.
Indian leaders wished Nepal their well wishes in the latter's endeavour to peace, according to Khanal.
He said that the leaders of the southern neighbour were concerned over UCPN- Maoists' announcement that they extended moral support to the Indian Maoists who had been waging guerilla war in almost 20 provinces.
In his discussion with Indian leaders, Khanal briefed them of the contemporary politics, challenges of the peace process and ongoing efforts to resolve the political crisis of the Himalayan nation. He told the Indian leaders that there was a need to engage, not negate the Maoists since they commanded 40 per cent of seats in the Constituent Assembly polls.
Khanal said BJP leaders were concerned about the Maoists' democratic credentials. "Will the Maoists be truly committed to democracy?" Khanal quoted BJP leaders as asking.
Indian leaders also said it was entirely for the Nepali leaders to find ways to resolve country's domestic problems.
The leaders also assured Khanal of all kinds of assistance in Nepal's peace and development initiatives.
Khanal is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh tomorrow.
