UML, Maoists for coalition govt after polls

Kathmandu, April 8:

The CPN-UML and the CPN-Maoist have expressed their commitment to continue being part of the coalition government of the seven-party alliance, even if their parties secure majority in the upcoming constituent assembly election, until a new constitution is promulgated.

In separate meetings today with former US president Jimmy Carter, CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and CPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda and senior leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai expressed this commitment.

Carter is here to observe the April 10 election.

“On Carter’s question about what type of government is expected after the election, I told him that an all-party government will continue,” said UML General Secretary Nepal, who is contesting from Kathmandu-2 and Rautahat-6.

UML general secretary Nepal, however, voiced concern bout the clashes between activists and cadres of the major parties, especially attack on his party men by the Young Communist League in different parts of the country.

He further said his party feared that election could be influenced by three factors — YCL activities, armed criminals of Tarai and the degree of impartiality of the police

administration during the election.

“I also urged Carter to coordinate with other national and international election observers and send observers to remote areas where the chances of poll rigging are high,” he added.

Following the meeting with Carter, Maoist second-in-command Dr Bhattarai, who is in the fray from constituency No 2 of Gorkha, said they told the former US President that there would be coalition government until a new constitution is formed.

“Carter was delighted when we told him about the agreement between the seven parties that the party that emerge as the largest party after the election will lead the government,” he added.
