UN team arriving to assist Ian Martin

Kathmandu, August 27 :

A four-member UN multi-disciplinary team will arrive here tomorrow, said a highly-placed source close to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

The team will assist Ian Martin, whom the US Secretary General Kofi Annan has appointed as his Personnel Representative in Nepal for support to the peace process. Martin arrived here today.

Annan believed it was now “urgent to undertake follow-on consultations with all concerned parties in Nepal to build on the common understanding that now exists, so that detailed planning for UN assistance may proceed.”

“Building on the recent pre-assessment mission to the country, Martin will conduct intensive discussions with the key actors in Nepal,” said a press release.

Martin, according to the statement, will begin his assignment immediately, and will be joined by a small multi-disciplinary team that will assist him in advising the parties in the areas where the UN has been asked to help.

The government and the Maoists in sending ‘identical letters’ had requested UN assistance in human rights monitoring, monitoring of the code of conduct during the ceasefire, management of arms and armed personnel.
