UNHCR official to assess refugees’ situation

Kathmandu, July 19:

UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner of Refugees (Operations) at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Judy Cheng-Hopkins has arrived here today in her mission to assess the situation of refugees in Nepal.

“I am here to familiarize myself with the situation here and hold discussions with the government and the refugees,” said Cheng-Hopkins on her arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) today. This is her first official visit to Nepal. It will last till July 22.

She said that UNHCR was looking for ways to find out a durable solution. “Let me learn, see and have talks with people here,” said Cheng-Hopkins, who is serving at the level of

United Nations Assistant Secretary General. She supervises all UNHCR operations worldwide.

Soon after her arrival, Cheng-Hopkins met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs KP Oli.

She will visit the Bhutanese refugee camps and review other refugee programmes in order to

get a first-hand view of UNHCR’s operations in Nepal, according to UNHCR in Kathmandu. She will also call on high-level government officials and hold meetings with UN counterparts and UNHCR’s NGO partners.
