Village where phone booth is five hours walk
Surkhet, May 30:
People of Ghat Village Development Committee, Surkeht district, have to walk for five hours to make a phone call.
As there is no telephone service in the village, locals have to cross the Karnali River in boats and walk for five hours to reach Sungurkhal VDC of Kailali district to make a call.
Dhan Bahadur BK, the Maoists’ Ghat VDC in-charge, said, “We have to pay Rs 20 each for a boat-ride and Rs 5 to make a phone call.” “The villagers are deprived of telephone service during the rainy season because boats cannot cross the flooded river,” BK added.
Rajesh Soni, programme coordinator of the Dalit Service Association, conceded that locals were facing hardship due to lack of telephone service in the village.
Most males of the village go to India for work and telephone is the only means through which they can be contacted. As many as 10 people from the village go to Kailali every day to call their relatives.
The Surkhet office of the Nepal Telecom said the installation of a telephone tower was underway in Nigalapani, adding that telephone network will be extended to the village once the tower is installed.
