Woman attacked by in-law dies

Birgunj, September 13

A woman, who was critically injured when her in-law attacked her with a knife over a land dispute on August 25, died while undergoing treatment at Basdilwa VDC – 6, Parsa, yesterday night.

The victim’s kin had reportedly cremated the body without informing security personnel.

Muniya Devi, 40, of the locality had sustained critical injuries when her in-law Prabhu Mahato attacked her in a fit of rage during a dispute. She was receiving treatment at Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-regional Hospital.

“The body was cremated the same night soon after her death. We have already taken the alleged in-law under control. However, neither the victim’s husband nor any kin of the victim want to lodge an FIR with the police. This has created hurdles in proceeding with the investigation,” said Parsa SP Raju Babu Shrestha.

Earlier, Muniya had filed a verbal complaint with the police from the hospital.

“It appears that Muniya did not lodge a written complaint due to pressure from her family,” said SP Shrestha.

The victim and the alleged, who were supposed to report to police, didn’t go there even once.

Security personnel learned about her death today morning after the final rites were conducted. “A case will be filed without an FIR. It may be a murder case and investigation is on,” said SP Shrestha.
