Women take up male jobs

Dhading, June 19:

Rural women of Dhading have started taking up jobs considered suitable only for males.

Laxmi Khatiwada, 18, and Kali Nepali of Dumrichaur Lamidanda in Kulleri VDC-3 plough the land and repair roofs of the houses respectively. Laxmi and Kali have also posed a challenge to the men because Nepali society considers roof-fixing and ploughing as male jobs. The villagers have spread rumours against Laxmi, who wanted to help her father in his work.

There are other reasons for women to take up male jobs. The conflict has left villages without males and women are forced to do male jobs like taking part in funeral ceremonies.
