Women taking lead

PYUTHAN: Pyuthan women have started taking leadership from the village to municipal council levels.

According to Chandra Bahadur GC of Pyuthan DDC, local women are involved in various social activities at a time when there is lack of people’s representatives after establishing Ward Civil Forum under the Ministry for Local Development.

Of the 19 wards in Pyuthan Municipality, women are leading in 16 wards as coordinators of the municipality. Officer Neba Bahadur Oli of the municipality said the civil forum was also being run by local women.

DDC statistics show that of the 9,900 members in the civil forum, around 6,000 are women. Federation of Non-governmental Organisation chairman Ramesh Shrestha appreciated the women’s participation in different social activities and their leadership quality.

Majority of the women from 42 VDCs and one municipality have taken up leadership. Bipana Bartaula of DDC said 61 per cent women from all the VDCs and 84 per cent from the municipality took up leadership.
