Youth kills parents; five injured

Bhairahawa, December 6

A youth killed his elderly parents and injured five others in Rupandehi today.

Ram Narayan Ahir Yadav, 75, and his wife Thagana Ahirani Yadav, 70, died after being attacked with a machete by their son Gorakh Yadav, 27, at their home in Omsatiya Rural Municipality, Sano Balapur, this afternoon.

While Ram Narayan died on the spot, Thagana, who was seriously injured in the attack, died during treatment at Universal Medical College in Bhairahawa.

Gorakh is the youngest of five sons of the Yadav couple and was described as a patient with mental illness by Omsatiya RM chairperson Hira Kewat.

“First, he killed his father in the afternoon before lunging at his mother, who somehow made it out of home, but was soon attacked by her psychologically disturbed son, who fell on her with the weapon he was holding when she tripped over and fell on the floor near the doorstep,” said Kewat.

“As he charged his mother with the weapon, his brothers rushed to her rescue, but to no avail as he didn’t spare them either,” he added.

The injured are now undergoing treatment at local health facilities. Their condition is reported to be normal.

Police investing the incident, too, have surmised that the incident was caused by the unstable mental health of the son. “We haven’t reckoned any reason why he had to kill his parents,” said Police Inspector Krishna Rana of Rupandehi District Police Office.

Police have arrested the murderer, and according to Inspector Rana, the perpetrator is in police custody now.

Bodies of the elderly are kept at district hospital, and will be handed over to the family after post-mortem.
