KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Council (CC), headed by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, on Sunday decided to hold its meeting on Tuesday.
The nomination of the next Chief Justice (CJ) — the present incumbent Kedar Prasad Giri will retire on May 4 — tops the agenda.
It is learnt that the CC is likely to discuss the appointment in other constitutional bodies as well.
Giri, an ex-officio member of the CC, said that senior most Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi was in the running for the top job.
“Seniority cannot be bypassed. Though many may presume somebody else will be nominated, that eventuality
is highly unlikely,” the Chief Justice told The Himalayan Times.
Justices Anup Raj Sharma, Khil Raj Regmi, Ram Prasad Shrestha, Bala Ram KC and Top Bahadur Magar are also eligible for the post since they all have three years of experience.
As per article 155 of the interim constitution, 2007, once the CC nominates, the candidate has to appear before the parliamentary hearing committee.
