KAPILVASTU: Three persons were burnt alive and 30 others injured when a massive fire gutted 70 houses in Kapilvastu district on Monday morning.
The charred bodies of Jagadev Kurmi, 60, Sagi Kurmi, 40 and Ayodya Kurmi, 50, were found in the site, Rajendra Shrestha, Inspector at Ganespur Area Police Office, said.
Over 30 persons who were injured in the course of fleeing the scene are undergoing treatment in Ganeshpur Health Post, police said.
The fire broke out from the cowshed of Tej Dhobi at Gedawagod in Ganeshpur-7 at 11 am.
A fire engine was sent to the affected area from Taulihawa the district headquarters to douse the fire.
Armed Police Force, civil police and locals are doing their best to battle the blaze which is still out of control. With dry wind conditions and scorching heat, it has become an uphill challenge to bring the fire under control, locals said.
The raging fire gutted an entire village whose inhabitants mostly belong to the Dalit and backward communities.
Both thatched and concrete houses were gutted in the fire, police said. The affected area lies some 60 kilometres west from district headquarters Taulihawa.
The victims are bemoaning the loss of their homes and their displacement due to the fire. They have demanded immediate relief from the local administration.
A team of Natural Disaster Rescue Committee and local administration has been sent to the affected area to get an estimate of the losses caused by the fire, Kapilvastu CDO Laxman Kumar Thapa said, adding that the local administration will provide relief and compensation to the victims after studying the report.
