KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has opposed the creation of states on the basis of geographical regions and ethnicity as proposed by other parties of the Constituent Assembly.
Addressing a book launch programme ‘Nepali Congress Ko Itihas Ko Prarup’ by NC Central Working Committee member Purushottam Basnet in the capital on Tuesday, NC president Girija Prasad Koirala revealed that Nepali Congress stands for drawing states on the basis of north-south lines.

He affirmed that NC will not allow creation of the states under any other basis saying that it may lead to the disintegration of the country.

Koirala expressed these remarks at a time when most of the political parties, including the UCPN (Maoist), the CPN-UML and the Madhesi parties have been insisting on creating states on the basis of region and mainly on ethnicity.
