KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday expressed serious concerns over the death of an inmate in Nakhu Jail, holding authorities accountable for the casualty which it termed a violation of human rights.

Issuing a press statement, the human rights body said the murder of Bhakta Bahadur Lama (36), who was battered to death by one of his fellow inmates, is against the norms of human rights and demanded punishment for the culprit and due compensation to the victim’s family.

The victim was attacked by Tika Bk hailing from Dolakha, who was a metal patient, on April 2, the statement said.

The statement said the rights body has appointed a commission to investigate the case and dispatched a team to the overcrowded jail which it said houses over 400 prisoners, exceeding its 175 people capacity.

The NHRC has also written to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prison Management Department and the Prison Division, calling their attention to the proper management of the prison so as to fend off any such untoward incident in future.
