People with vegetable gardens are always looking for ways to give their gardens a boost, especially in the early summer when everything is blooming and greening up. Going organic is very popular and economical as well as one of the best things that can be done for your garden.

Here is a simple yet efficient liquid organic fertiliser for your vegetables.

• Finely chop the cabbage so that it will break down fast, releasing its minerals and magnesium. Crush the eggshells into a rough powder. The smaller the materials in your organic fertiliser, the faster they will break down.

• Pour the cabbage and egg shells into a 5-gallon bucket. Add ashes, cornmeal, grass clippings and molasses. Each of these will add essential elements necessary for plant growth, ashes for calcium and potassium, cornmeal for phosphorus and grass clippings for nitrogen. The molasses will add sugars that encourage microbial growth to decompose everything.

• Pour the boiling water over the ingredients in the bucket. Stir, using a wooden paint stirrer or something similar. It will not be a pretty mixture, but be patient -your plants will be grateful.

• Allow the organic raw fertiliser to 'cook' for two weeks so the materials can decompose, releasing the minerals and essential elements. You can stir it up every few days to add a little oxygen to the brew. It is best to keep it in a sunny spot outside.

• Strain off the liquid by either pouring it through a screen into another bucket. Most of the materials will have sunk to the bottom, so you can also ladle it out, using a quart-size container and being careful not to disturb the settled stuff.

• Mix the liquid organic fertiliser in a 1:4 ratio with water and use on your vegetable plants. Put the solid material on your compost pile.

You can also try this another organic fertiliser using kitchen waste and other items:

• Place ground egg shells, coffee grounds, grass clippings, newspaper, leaves, kitchen scraps and rabbit manure into a worm compost bin as worm food.

• Collect worm casings. Mix three parts worm casings with one part Epsom salt into large bucket.

• Store the bucket in a cool, dry place when not using. Continue to add worm casing, Epsom salt mixture to the bucket.

• The worm casing Epsom salt mixture can be liquefied before using. Fish emulsion also works well as a liquefied fertiliser.
