KATHMANDU: Former Deputy Prime Minister and a veteran leader of the Nepali Congress Shailaja Acharya, 64, has been admitted at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Marajgunj in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon after developing respiratory problems.
“Her condition is critical,” doctors said.
According to doctors and family sources, Acharya is suffering from multiple respiratory complications.
Shailaja, the aunt of Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, was taken to the Thai capital, Bangkok on May 26, 2008 after four months of treatment for depression at Teaching Hospital. She was then taken to India for treatment. But the doctors there couldn’t help her. Acharya was then brought back to Kathmandu admitted to Teaching Hospital.
Acharya, who played an important role in the restoration of democracy in the country after the royal coup of December 15, 1960, started showing signs of memory loss in early 2006.
