KATHMANDU: Nepal has asked the United Nations to extend its mission in the country, a government official said on Tuesday. The UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) was set up in 2007 to support the peace process, and its mandate is due to expire on January 23. “A formal request has been sent to the UN Security Council for the extension of UNMIN until May 15, 2010,” foreign ministry spokesman Durga Prasad Bhattarai told AFP. UNMIN’s mandate has already been extended four times since it was established, and the UN has expressed serious concern over the slow progress of the peace process.
