KATHMANDU: In a fresh twist Sujata Koirala, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister on Monday. PM Madhav Kumar Nepal will be administering the oath of office and secrecy at 6:30 pm today at the President’s Office, Shital Niwas.

PM Nepal has been under intense pressure from president of Nepali Congress and father of Sujata Koirala, Girija Prasad Koirala for promoting her to the coveted post of the Deputy Prime Minister for over a month now.

Sujata who was miffed at the PM’s refusal to elevate her to the post of DPM earlier did not accompany him on his maiden trip to India in August at the eleventh hour. Following her refusal, the central committee of the NC on August 19 summoned her seeking clarifications on her decision to back out of the PM’s India trip. Replying to the NC CC leaders’ queries Sujata Koirala claimed that she cancelled her trip owing to health reasons. She was vehemently criticised for this decision from all sides with accusations that she breached diplomatic norms. However, all these issues were settled after her response in person to the NC CC meeting.
