This important energy building skill is great training for high altitude trekking. It’s very important for high altitude training to practice energy absorption, lung cell stimulation, cleansing breath and deep breathing.

Walk with your head up, chin drawn in slightly, shoulders back and take measured steps. Inhale a complete breath through your nose, counting (in your head), making the inhalation extend over the eight counts. Exhale slowly through the nostrils, counting as before. Always do the same number of steps breathing in as breathing out. Then repeat and try increasing the length of inhalation and exhalation counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, one count to a step breathing normally. Repeat as long as you choose. Eventually there is no need to stop the practice on a thirty to forty minute walk. In the Himalayas, you may need to modify this practice because there is less oxygen in each breath.
