Enslaved or benefited?
We wake up to news alerts on smart phones. Sips of morning tea are coupled with a glance at daily action plan on a tab. It has been long since cameras are gathering dust somewhere in a rack. The black and white LCD monitors of television and computers are disappearing. The LED television sets and laptops are most of our chattels.
Needless to say, it is modern times. There were days of hardship our parents and grandparents underwent. We now enjoy achievements of this hour. The modern tools and appliances have been making work easier and faster, gradually replacing manual works. Many developed countries lay off hundreds of employees daily after mechanization of production processes. Moreover, with the revolution of ICT, many sectors have gone digital. It has created myriad new opportunities while rendering many things useless and dysfunctional.
Moreover, the worldwide network ‘Internet’ has revolutionized entire information and communication system. It is not only used for acceleration of information and communication but also to entertain, and for business. Nepal is no exception to the lure of this global network. Gradual development of infrastructures has contributed to the expansion of the Internet. Currently, more than 44 per cent of Nepal’s population is linked to the Internet as per the report of Nepal Telecommunications Authority. Similarly, 5.5 million Nepalis are said to be Facebook users.
The scientific achievements and the ICT wonders have highly influenced our lifestyle with the change in thinking pattern. Family and social values are eroding fast cultivating weird habits. A paradigm shift has occurred forcing us to study the tech-sociology and its effects on our lives. ICT gadgets are making members non-communicative and unsocial within a family at the same time linking us to the global populace. The verbal and virtual communication within a family, office or any organization has died, creating a distant weird new world.
Time has come for us to think about the entire gamut of scientific achievements and ICT wonders. Are these only facilitating our life or inviting hosts of problems and challenges that are difficult to sort out. It is worth mentioning here that a teenage girl died after the Narayani River swallowed her while taking a selfie on the river bank with a friend. The teenage people of tender heart are easily swayed by modern ICT marvel.
