Lease of life

With a view to make education accessible to all, the Office of the Controller of Examinations, Sano Thimi, has introduced distant learning system through which students will be able to appear for SLC examination without having to attend school. For the purpose, the Distance Education Open Learning Division will not only waive tuition and examination fees but will also distribute books and educational materials free of cost. The system, if properly operated, will not only help students who have been deprived of education to pursue their academic goals but also help produce the much-needed educated manpower for the country. It would especially be a boon to students who have been compelled to discontinue their studies for several reasons.

Open education system has allowed millions of students across the globe to pursue higher education. In Nepal, while most students give up their academic pursuits because of their inability to finance their education, others simply don’t have a choice because they don’t have schools and colleges in their areas. Open education system will extend students’ reach to education and thus help them complete their education. As a matter of fact, the government should also establish an open university through which students can pursue higher education. Educated citizenry is what Nepal needs to trail-blaze its way to progress and prosperity.
