Work in tandem

The published new reports highlighting the tussle between the Nepal Army and the Ministry of Defence has created a very confusing picture in the public mind. The two ought to work in tandem instead of blaming each other. I have learnt that the recent recruitment by the NA is at the root of the controversy. If that was the case, the ministry ought to have stepped in earlier. More so, the language used in the controversy does not befit people belonging to such high stature.

In fact, I believe that the matter should not have been publicised in the first place. Now, those

concerned should try to set matters right instead creating more fuss, only to play with the confidence that the people have put in this government.

Pleasing

It is welcome news that the government has decided to provide unemployed youths loans of up to Rs. two lakh. For lack of job opportunities, tens of thousands of youths are compelled to leave the country in search of employment abroad annually.

Taking advantage of the loans at low interest rates will not only prevent the massive brain drain that we have been witnessing for years now but will also encourage youths to expend their labour and genius on the development of their own country.

Moreover, at a time when, already, hundreds of Nepali migrants have started to return home

as a result of foreign companies retrenching, this is the right time for the government to take such an initiative. However, it is also necessary to see to it that the youths do not

misuse the loans.

Control

This is in reference to the news report “4 held for spurious liquor sale” (THT, Jan. 29). Consumption of spurious liquors reportedly is known to have taken several lives in the past year alone. However, this is often the case with unbranded alcoholic liquors. That even branded liquors are being targeted by unscrupulous people to make a fast buck is alarming.

Meanwhile, liquor trade in spite of the government’s crackdown recently seems

to be flourishing as ever.

The government instead of only concentrating on maximising revenues needs to take drastic

steps to control alcohol abuse.

Liquor

This is in reference to the steps being taken by the administration to check the sale of spurious alcoholic drinks in the market. As seen in the past, the officials wake up when the damage has been done; and when the issue has subsided, all is forgotten. Not only in this case, but in every other issue, the presence of the administration is mandatory to protect the interests of the consumers.

This is but one area where a real problem of the death of a consumer occurred, but there are many more in which the consumers are fobbed off with adulterated food items but there is no effort at checking the rampant malpractices even in the Kathmandu metropolis. It calls for some sense of accountability from those who have the responsibility.
