PM’s not so glorious past :

A glance at Prime Minister G P Koirala’s record is enough to show that he is far from being a democratic, competent and clean leader. His recent wrong decisions include the unpatriotic amendment to the citizenship law, arbitrary appointment of ambassadors, and delay in filling the top vacancies at four universities. He seems to have no respect for the wishes of the people as expressed through the Jana Andolan II.

In this light, the vesting of absolute power in the Prime Minister, under the interim constitution, is certainly not a wise step, at least, as long as Koirala is at the helm.

Prepare now :

Instead of using ex-Gurkhas for the task of arms management, why not select from among the soldiers of both the state and Maoist armies? If the idea is to foster mutual trust and build a single national army, they might as well start preparing now.

Chaotic :

Traffic in the Kathmandu Valley has been chaotic, thanks to the frequent protests held by the various political parties and their sister organisations.

Today, every small group, political or non-political, jumps at the slightest opportunity to demonstrate, block roads and burn tyres. But it is the general people who have to bear the consequences of these thoughtless actions. Even the establishment of the Metropolitan Police has not improved the situation. A day may come when it will be faster to walk than travel in vehicles in the Valley.

But the authorities do not seem to have displayed enough concern to deal with the problem. The traffic situation could improve considerably if only organisers of rallies and gatherings timed the events to avoid the peak hours.

Another effective measure would be to declare certain busy areas protest-free zones.

Football :

Apropos of the news “Abramovich signals end to extravagant spending” (THT, Dec. 25), I am totally against the idea of billionaires with little knowledge of football buying rich soccer clubs only to make money. All professional soccer clubs should have an equal opportunity to shine, professionally as well as financially.

Only people devoted to the game can understand its ins and outs and uplift the standard of soccer. In this context, it might not be a bad idea to consider two things — slapping caps on the salaries of top footballers and allowing only those with a deep knowledge of the game to buy any soccer club.

Vague :

The news brief “Refugees to fly to Canada” (THT, Dec. 25) was confusing. It does not mention why only seven refugees were chosen to fly to Canada. On what basis were they selected?

Confusing news reports cannot answer readers’ questions.

New coat :

The design of the new coat of arms is brilliant. It is also true that no single design can satisfy all people. But in a democracy there should be a lot of debate on important issues.
