Arms and the Maoists :
This refers to the report “Issue now is arms management: PM” (THT, August 21). Prime Minister Koirala has hit the nail on the head. There has been much hue and cry in the House of Representatives over Maoist violence in the countryside. At the heart of the problem lies the Maoists’ arms that are utilised for abductions, extortions, etc. Thus, credible elections are impossible unless the Maoists give up their arms.
The American ambassador was among the first to speak against the continued use of violent means by the Maoists. Most of the democracies, including India, have spoken against the use of force by the rebels. The Maoists might waste a great opportunity to enter mainstream politics if they continue to resort to violence.

Main issue :
I find the never-ending debate on the political space for the monarch disgusting. People in power should not waste their time on such petty issues. Let the people decide whether to allow the monarch any space.
The self-serving politicians, as always, remain aloof from the people’s true aspirations. They should learn a thing or two from their long stint in power since the restoration of democracy in 1990. Is it certain that the exploitation of the people will end once the King disappears from the political scene?
Why not concentrate on the issues that the Jana Andolan II has brought forth? When will the politicians learn to work for the people instead of engaging in narrow pursuits? The government should focus on ensuring that the constituent assembly polls are held at the earliest.

Unruly :
This refers to the news “Tipsy army men rough up three Baglung locals” (THT, August 17). Such irresponsible acts perpetrated by soldiers on helpless civilians are hardly amusing. This is not the first incident of blatant abuse of power by Nepal Army personnel.
If those who are supposed to defend the country act in such an irresponsible manner, how can the civilians be expected to behave any better? More importantly, will the irresponsible soldiers be ever punished?

Violations :
The Maoists are going against the 12-point, 8-point and 5-point agreements. Everyday we read about their flagrant violation of the accords. Kidnappings and extortions continue despite the Maoist leadership’s commitment to the contrary.
But why is the government reluctant to punish them? If the Maoists do not desist from violent activities, they cannot expect to gain many votes in the upcoming elections.

Jubilation :
Kamal Bahadur Adhikari has done all Nepalis proud by bagging the first gold medal for Nepal in the ongoing South Asian Games in Sri Lanka. That Adhikari became the first Nepali to win a gold medal in weightlifting makes his achievement all the more remarkable.
More golds for Nepal in the days ahead will be a matter of jubilation.
