Politics and society

People often regard politics as a dirty game and its players as the dirtiest ones. From outside, it looks Nepalese don’t enjoy politics at all. Even we say the politicians are the major factor in ruining the nation. If so, why do we participate in elections? Why do we claim ourselves as communists, democrats and others? Why do people allow keeping parties’ flags on their roof tops. Why do we fight in the name of political doctrines?

Sheer hypocrisy can be seen in our people. It’s like looking London and talking Tokyo. In our society political gossip gets first priority in public sphere. In tea stalls, get-togethers or on certain occasions our people love to talk about political matters. The current scenario of our society is divided on the basis of political principle. We can’t see an independent person; s/he is divided into so many political ideologies. If one party announces a shutdown then the next day the entire nation will be closed. No matter what will happen to the country’s economy but people are ready to do anything for their party. It shows that people prioritize political parties over the nation. In such situation how can we say that we don’t like politics?

Political campaigns, rallies, and conventions are like a fair for us.  People enjoy participating in political programmes. Apart from this people are ready to travel 14 hours, 12 hours for making parties’ rallies a grand success. During elections, polling stations in villages are decorated like a bride. Public programmes are seen hither and thither. It resembles the festive environment in villages.

In every election, candidates spend millions of rupees without disclosing their sources of income. It doesn’t matter if they win or lose but their love for politics compel them to spend as much as they can. Bank loan, help from friends, and fund collection are other means of raising money during the elections. No matter whether they will pay back or not but they are ready to do anything just to stand up for political fray.

Indeed politics have been an inseparable part of our life. And it is the duty of people to properly understand the politics, political parties and their ideologies. In today’s world, everything is guided by politics. We know what has happened in the aftermath of last November’s US presidential election that elected Donald Trump who has been talking about “Buy American and Hire American”. It is therefore important to know about politics whether one likes it or not.
