Selfless politics: Found wanting

The democratic parties should be institutionally accountable. It is because political power is a trust of people and requires periodic renewal through the election of parties, local bodies, and the national body politics for its legitimate use

A democracy is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the name of people and exercised directly by them or by their elected representatives. People are always in the center in any forms of democracy. Most political parties are exercising the slogan of democracy. These political parties are groups of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in the government. They agree on some policies and programms for the society with a view to promote the collective goodness of the people.

But the reality is that many of them have an ideological core, but some do not, and many represent very different ideologies. The general people are raising the voice after the neglect by political leaders after fulfilling their desire of reaching power or position. Top level leaders and politics are centered on conflict of interest and their ambition. This is a serious matter for the common people.

Likewise, the people have the right and liberty to elect their representatives for the different state levels which help to influence the political development of the country. But the selection of who is eligible is still in the hands of members of the same elites now dominating the political parties. The poor masses remain excluded with little chance to exercise their right through the current parliamentary system.

Different political parties exist in Nepal and all groups have the slogan of providing effective and efficient service to the people. In other words, they are doing politics in the name of people. Many agitations are launched by disgruntled groups and consequently many actions and reaction oriented activities occur.

Everyone knows that political parties are essential aspects of a representative democracy. On the basis of a particular ideological worldview, political leaders organize their followers and ordinary people in the party, formulate strategies and programs, administer power, and exert pressure for desirable policy outcome. But, the fact of politics is that whatever the truth, it may not be reality whereas whatever the reality it may not be the truth.  It is because politics is not like a straight line.

If any capable leader brings or builds some developmental works as road constructions, provide electricity facilities and other multidimensional developmental activities, s/he is said to be for the people. But, the maxim of political leaders behind such development activities in a particular area is for securing his/ her vote for the next political race.

Leaders always want to bring developmental plans and action in their constituency area   from where they get the majority vote in elections. If the political leaders are really addressing the need of the people or giving priority to their prosperity, they should begin from the grass root level.

For instance, if traffic accidents frequent happen in any road of the country, there should be a system for immediate rescue and treatment for the victims. Furthermore, deliberations should be conducted about the condition of the roads and proper engineering designs of them.

Similarly, if farmers are suffering from the total damage of their crops because of diseases, there should be the provision of immediate compensation from the side of the government. There is an urgent need for immediate service to the needy people. This provision should be clearly mentioned while distributing the budget at the local level.

Moreover, Nepalese political parties should carry out political modernization and democratization through political education, social mobilization, recruitment of leadership and aggregation, and expression of public interest. By acting as a transform agent, they should project societal interest in decision-making through effective communication functions between the political system and the citizens.

However, political parties appear weak in maintaining a democratic dynamic between the inputs and outputs of political systems and remain  beyond expectation and consequently face the charge of deficit in performance while in the seat of government. Defining a single universe of democracy, peace, and development in Nepal is another central challenge for the political parties.

In this condition, the assertion of popular will is a key strategy of political parties to influence the people. Nepalese political parties can fully exercise democracy if their leaders are capable of protecting the freedom, security and dignity of citizens.

For that, the democratic parties should be institutionally accountable. It is because political power is a trust of people and requires periodic renewal through the election of parties, local bodies, and the national body politics for its legitimate use. They, therefore, must operate transparently in response to the demands of the general people.

The key features Nepalese people want to see in  new politics are:  transparent decision making of the government , willingness to negotiate in conflict situations , broad-based participation in each and every activity of the nation, openness of leaders , equitable distribution of  resources , power sharing, and a productive economy for the welfare of the nation as a whole.
