THT 10 YEARS AGO: Six passengers killed, 7 hurt in Kapilvastu blast

At least six persons were killedand seven injured when an explosive device planted by the Maoists along the Mahendra Highway in Kapilvastu went off today, according to western division headquarters of RNA. The 13 people, all passengers of a bus (Na 2 Kha 712 ) headed for Mahendranagar from Kathmandu, were trying to remove obstructions placed by the Maoists at Banaksawasa of Shivapur VDC-1, 3 km east of the Surai transit point along the East-West Mahendra Highway when the incident occurred. Five of them died on the spot, while one died on the way to a hospital in Butwal. Three of the injured are said to be in critical condition. According to the driver of the bus, Dil Bahadur Kunwar, the bus, which had left Kathmandu on Thursday, was stuck at Saljhandi of Rupandehi till yesterday due to a bandh in Kapilvastu. The bus, however, left for its destination along with other vehicles by removing obstructions on the highway today, Kunwar said.The Lumbini Zonal Administration Office and the RNA No 22 Brigade jointly organised a press conference and disclosed the names of the people killed in the explosion. DB Magar of Shreepur VDC-6, Kailali; Shuresh Chaudhary of Shukhad, Kailali; Diliram Phular of Dhangadhi; Karan Singh Yer of Ajayamer, Dadeldhura; and Indra Khatri of Dang were killed in the explosion. One body was yet to be identified. Six of the injured have been taken to Kathmandu for treatment, while one is undergoing treatment at the Lumbini Zonal Hospital, it was stated in the press-meet.
16 students hurt in clashes with cops, 6 held

Sixteen students were injured in clashes with riot police during torch rallies organised by the student unions in Kathmandu, Nepalgunj and Bara today. Police also rounded up six student leaders from the rallies. The demonstrations were part of the students’ ongoing protest programme against the hike in prices of petroleum products. Fourteen students were injured when riot police rained batons on them during torch rallies in various parts of the valley in the evening. Six students were injured in a scuffle with the police when the former took out a torch rally from Dillibazar to Putalisadak and from the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) central office, Baghbazar, to the Old Bus Park. Police arrested three students, including Mahesh Shrestha of the ANNFSU, from a rally organised by the eight student unions and that originated from the Old Bus Park. Another eight students, including Bharat Shahi, central member of the Nepal Students Union, were injured when they clashed with the police in a rally that began from Kumari Hall.
