2008 finalist exits in 1st round
ROME: French teenager Alize Cornet, a runner up in Rome last year, was knocked out in the second round of the Italian Open on Tuesday.
Cornet, the 13th seed, lost 6-4, 6-1 to Kateryna Bondarenko.
Bondarenko, a 22-year-old Ukrainian, is ranked 61 in the world.
That match was the only one to be completed at the Foro Italico before a rain storm forced a suspension of play.
Top-ranked Dinara Safina and Serena Williams are scheduled to have their opening matches on Tuesday. Two-time defending champion Jelena Jankovic was in action against Gisela Dulko of Argentina before the rain delay.
