Berdych upsets Rafael Nadal
Toronto, August 11:
Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic upset defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the third round of the Rogers Cup on Thursday.
Berdych frustrated the Spaniard by keeping his rallies as short as possible.
It worked, and the 13th-seeded Berdych scored his second straight win over Nadal, after a win last year in Cincinnati.
Top-seeded Swiss Roger Federer also advanced with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 win over Dmitry Tursunov of Russia. Federer will face Xavier Malisse of Belgium, who defeated Thomas Johansson of Sweden 7-6 (7), 6-3.
Berdych will face Frnch Richard Gasquet, who beat Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Fernando Gonzalez of Chile reached the quarters with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) win over Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia and will play Jose Acasuso of Argentina, who defeated Julien Benneteau of France 6-3, 7-6 (4). Andy Murray of Britain eliminated Carlos Moya of Spain 6-2, 6-4 and will face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who beat Davide Sanguinetti of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1).
