Bhandari, Mahat set records
Kathmandu, June 29 :
Rajendra Bhandari and Prem Mahat set new national records in the National Open Athletics built-up competition ahead of the 10th South Asian Games.
Rajendra Bhandari of Tribhuvan Army Club, who holds the national records in 5,000m and 3,000m steeple chase, set the new record of 30 minutes 39.10 seconds in 10,000 metres breaking the 18-year record of Hari Bahadur Rokaya set in Seoul Olympics. Rokaya’s timing was 30 minutes, 48.16 seconds. Arjun Prasad Dhakal and Gyan Bahadur Bohara finished second and third.
Mahat, also of TAC, broke his own record in 1,000m finishing the distance in 2 minutes 30.90 seconds that bettered his mark of 2 minutes 35 seconds. Radheshyam Kwan and Santosh Kumar Shrestha finished second and third.
Nirmala Bharati of Nepal Police won the women’s 10,000m ahead of Sita Rimal. In men’s 3,000m, Pancha Lal Dangol (TAC) claimed the top spot, while Kanchi Maya Koju (Nepal Police) won the women’s 3,000m. Chhaya Khatri of Nepal Police won the women’s 1,000m. Purna Gautam (TAC) claimed the men’s 150m. Sabitri Nepali won the women’s 150m. A total of 45 athletes — 35 men and 10 women — participated in the event.
