Bhutan send SL packing, advance to semi-finals

Bhutan thrashed Sri Lanka 6-0 in the Group A match of the SAFF U-15 Championship here at the ANFA Complex grounds today.

The second consecutive defeat meant Sri Lanka were out of the semi-finals race, while Bhutan and Bangladesh made it to the last four from the group. The two teams will face each other on Wednesday to decide the group winners.

In Group B, India are at the top of the table with three points after their 9-0 thrashing victory over the Maldives, while Nepal are yet to play their match. Nepal will face Maldives on Monday.

On Sunday, Dorji Khando and Kelzang Jigmi netted a brace each for Bhutan, while Kinga Wangchuk and Siddhartha Gurung scored one apiece. Khando opened the scoring for Bhutan in the ninth minute and double the tally in the 24th minute.

Wangchuk made it 3-0 in the 31st minute before Jigmi scored two goals in three minutes.  Jigmi scored his first goal in the 43rd minute and added another in the injury time of the first half as Bhutan went into the break with a commanding 5-0 lead. Gurung completed the scoring with the team’s sixth goal moments before the final whistle.
