Boys Union upset MPC
Kathmandu, January 8:
The relegation-threatened Boys Union Club upset Mahendra Police Club (MPC) 3-0 putting an end to their 14-game unbeaten run while Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) beat Brigade Boys Club (BBC) 3-1 in the Martyrs Memorial San Miguel ‘A’ Division at the Dasharath Stadium today.
MPC’s first loss of the league means Tribhuvan Army Club enjoyed a clear three-point lead after 15 rounds. Both MPC and TAC were going neck-to-neck with two draws each in the first leg. TAC lead with 41 points, while MPC have 38. BUC are 11th with 12 points.
At the bottom, the second victory gave Samsung JYC a little relief as they leap-frogged from bottom to 12th place with eight points. BBC also have eight points but are behind JYC on goal difference, while Saraswoti Youth Club are last with six points.
At Dasharath Stadium, Raju Rai struck twice and Dipendra Pariyar scored another for BUC. Dipen Shrestha and Min Lama scored for JYC while BBC’s Nirmal Gurung conceded an own goal. Binod Thapa pulled back one for BBC.
Raju Rai converted a penatly to put BUC ahead in the 57th minute after Ganesh Budhathoki handled the ball inside the box. Rai scored a spectacular goal to double the tally in the 65th minute when his shot from a tight angle hit the inner bar before entering the nets. Pariyar capitalised on a misunderstading between MPC defender Rakesh Shrestha and goalie Ritesh Thapa to add the third goal.
BUC skipper Bijay Maharjan said that they were at best hoping for a draw. “It is indeed an upset and the result will help in our effort to avoid relegation,” Maharjan said. MPC assistant coach Anil Adhikari said that the penalty was the turning point of the game. “Our players lost their composure after trailing by a goal,” he added.
In another match, Dipen Shrestha headed home on a free kick from Adarsha Sahi to give JYC the lead in the 21st minute.
Binod Thapa equalised five minutes later but an own goal from Nirmal Gurung put JYC ahead in the 33rd minute. Min Lama’s solitary effort saw JYC add third goal in the 70th minute to assure their second win of the league.
