Caracas advances in Copa Libertadores
CARACAS: Caracas of Venezuela advanced to its first ever Copa Libertadores quarterfinals with a 4-0 home win over Ecuadorean club Deportivo Cuenca on Tuesday.
Figueroa, Rodrigo Prieto, Emilio Renteria and Jose Manuel Rey scored to allow Caracas to overturn a 2-1 deficit after the first leg of the round of 16 match up in Ecuador.
Caracas will play the winner of the tie between Gremio of Brazil and Universidad San Martin of Peru in the final eight.
Figueroa was brought down for a penalty and converted the spot kick himself after 24 minutes to open the scoring for Caracas.
Prieto headed home a right wing cross from Renteria to double the lead in the 43rd minute and Caracas continued to press in the second half as Renteria scored the third from 40 meters (yards) five minutes after half time.
A free kick from Rey in the 74th minute gave the Venezuelan club a comfortable 5-2 aggregate win.
