Chelsea held; Hammers beat Middlesbrough
London, September 16:
Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in the Premier League put the Gunners top of the standings with Liverpool and Chelsea being held to a 0-0 draws.
Chelsea had a goal disallowed in their 0-0 draw with Blackburn. Arsenal lead with 13 points, followed by Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea with 11 after a two-week international break. West Ham and Everton have 10 points.
West Ham beat Middlesbrough for their first home win of the season with goals from Lee Bowyer, Dean Ashton and an own-goal from Luke Young. Wigan drew 1-1 with Fulham after a penalty kick from Jason Koumas in the 80th minute. That cancelled out an 11th-minute goal from Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey.
Sunderland earned their second win of the season with a 2-0 win over Reading. Kenwyne Jones hit a long-range shot past Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann in the 29th minute. Ross Wallace doubled the lead in the 47th minute, but Dave Kitson pulled a goal back for Reading in the 85th. Birmingham defeated Bolton 1-0 through a 37th-minute goal from Olivier Kapo.
Spanish La Liga:
MADRID: Javier Saviola scored his first goal in the Spanish La Liga for Real Madrid on Saturday to lead the defending champions to a 3-1 win over promoted Almeria. Wesley Sneijder and substitute Gonzalo Higuain added Madrid’s other goals for Madrid.
Madrid have nine points — three more than Valencia. Mallorca, FC Barcelona, Murcia and Valladolid all follow with four.
Also, a late goal from David Silva gave Valencia a 2-1 win over another newcomer, Valladolid.
Valencia forward Silva fired home in the 88th minute to bring Valencia their second league win of the season. Valencia fell behind in the 10th minute when Valladolid midfielder Daniel Kome took advantage of goalkeeper Santiago Canizares’ failure to catch a cross. Fernando Morientes scored Valencia’s equaliser in the 24th, pouncing after Angel Arizmendi’s long-range shot was parried by goalkeeper Ludovic Butelle, who joined Valladolid on loan from Valencia.
