Premier League clubs Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all won on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of England’s League Cup.

Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 4-0, advancing behind Frank Lampard’s first-half goal and second-half tallies by Andriy Shevchenko, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba.

Liverpool edged Birmingham City 1-0 with Daniel Agger scoring late in the first half. Emmanuel Adebayor’s 85th-minute goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory at Everton. Tottenham Spurs needed extra-time goals by Jermain Defoe and Tom Huddlestone to win 3-1 over Port Vale.

Italian Cup

ROME: AC Milan rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Brescia 4-2 and Sampdoria defeated Serie A co-leader Palermo 1-0 in the first leg of the Italian Cup fourth round.

After Matteo Serafini and Luis Alfageme gave Brescia a 2-0 lead at halftime, Milan recovered with two goals by Marco Borriello and one each by Cristian Brocchi and Filippo Inzaghi. Vincenzo Montella scored two first-half goals for AS Roma in a 2-1 win at Triestina.
