Craig, Steve triumph

SYDNEY: Craig Lowndes and Steve Richards teamed to win Australia’s most prestigious motor race, the Bathurst 1000, on Sunday after their Holden started from 15th place on the grid. Lowndes, an Australian, won the race for the sixth time, joining Larry Perkins and Mark Skaife in joint-third on the all-time winners’ list, trailing nine-time winner Peter Brock and Richards’ father Jim Richards, who won the race seven times. It was also Lowndes’ 13th podium finish at the race, breaking Brock’s record of 12. Steve Richards, from New Zealand, posted his fourth win in the race on the Mount Panorama circuit. Lowndes and Richards finished 1.3 seconds ahead of V8 Supercars championship leader Mark Winterbottom and Steve Owen, driving a Ford. Holden’s Garth Tander and Warren Luff were third.
