Del Potro in first-round exit at Japan Open

TOKYO: US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro crashed out of the Japan Open at the first hurdle at the hands of French qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old Argentine top seed, playing his first match since his victory at Flushing Meadows last month, struggled throughout the first round clash, losing 4-6, 4-6 in 88 minutes.

Del Potro, the losing finalist here last year, is number five in the world, compared with Roger-Vasselin's ranking of 189.

Roger-Vasselin will play either Jurgen Melzer of Austria or Leonardo Mayer of Argentina in the second round.
