Disabled man sets new record
Singapore, August 1:
Exhausted William Tan set a new record for the greatest distance covered in a wheelchair in 24 hours — 243-km, reports said. The Singaporean neuroscientist completed 607 laps around the Raffles Institution’s track when the clock ran down on Sunday. The previous record was 181-km set by Rafael Emilo of the Dominican Republic in 2001. Tan told The Straits Times that the thought of giving up occurred to him but “too much was at stake”. He hopes to raise $60,000 from the feat for the Women’s and Children’s Healthcare Foundation. In May, Tan became the first paraplegic to complete 10 marathons on seven continents over 70 days.
