Spain’s David Villa was almost a one-man show, scoring three times in a 4-1 rout of Russia in Group D. Fernando Torres fed the streaking Villa for a right-footed shot in the 20th minute. The striker slid Andres Iniesta’s slick pass under goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev for his second in the 44th. Villa completed his memorable game after dribbling around Roman Shirokov in the 74th to shoot past Akinfeev with his right foot.

Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic found his long-lost scoring touch in a 2-0 victory over defending champion Greece. Ibrahamovic had no international goals since October 2005 before connecting with a powerful right-footed shot in the 67th minute for his 19th goal for Sweden.

INJURIES

Turkey lost captain Emre Belozoglu for Wednesday’s game with Switzerland because of a leg injury. The midfielder has swelling caused by a buildup of fluid.

“The fact that Emre will not play is not only about substituting one player for another. Emre’s role in the team is not that simple,” a visibly upset coach Fatih Terim said, his voice much hoarser than usual.

HISTORY

David Villa’s hat trick was the first at Euros since 2000, when Patrick Kluivert of the Netherlands and Sergio Conceicao of Portugal each had three-goal games.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goal in the 67th minute for Sweden was the first Greece has allowed in Euros in 425 minutes.

GOAL OF THE DAY

Defender Joan Capdevila led a breakout on the second goal, finding Andres Iniesta with a cross-field pass. Iniesta left Russia’s Yuri Zhirkov flat-footed to feed Villa, who had slipped between two defenders for a crisp finish and a 2-0 lead in a 4-1 Spain win.

LOOKAHEAD

As the second set of games begins, co-host Switzerland plays Turkey in Basel, with the loser almost certainly eliminated in Group A. Two first-game winners, the Czech Republic and Portugal, meet in Geneva.

QUOTABLE

“When I think of Villa, it’s a name that makes me think of scoring. The Spanish team has the luck of having players that can score.”—Spain coach Luis Aragones of David Villa’s hat trick in a 4-1 win over Russia.

“The Greeks didn’t play with heart like they normally do, and the Swedes pushed us hard. Some of my players were unable to play at the level I expected them to. They tried hard but it wasn’t enough.”—Greece’s German coach Otto Rehhagel after a 2-0 loss to Sweden.
