Euro 2008 Today
VIENNA, Austria (AP)—A look at Day 13 of the 2008 European Championship on Thursday:
RESULTS
Germany 3, Portugal 2 (Germany advances to semifinals)
HIGHLIGHTS
Germany struck for two first-half goals, by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose, then held off Portugal before Michael Ballack added a decisive third in a 3-2 in Basel, Switzerland. The three-time champion Germans will play the winner of Friday’s match between Croatia and Turkey in the semifinals.
STARS
Bastian Schweinsteiger, coming of a one-game suspension, scored Germany’s first goal and set up the next two with long free kicks in a 3-2 victory over Portugal that boosted the Germans into the semifinals.
INJURIES
Italy defender Andrea Barzagli has been ruled out of the European Championship with a left knee injury, further weakening the Azzurri backline heading to Sunday’s quarterfinal with Spain. Barzagli was hurt during training Thursday and will require surgery. He has requested to be operated on in Austria so he can remain with the team, similarly to captain Fabio Cannavaro.
HISTORY
Germany made the final four of Euros for the first time since winning its third championship in 1996. The Germans beat Portugal 3-2 in Basel, Switzerland.
GOAL OF THE DAY
Bastian Schweinsteiger cut down the middle of the field as teammates Michael Ballack and Lukas Podolski exchanged passes on the left wing. Podolski then broke free and his pass toward the net was met perfectly by Schweinsteiger’s right foot from close range for Germany’s first goal in a 3-2 win over Portugal in the quarterfinals.
LOOKAHEAD
Turkey, one of the surprise quarterfinalists, plays Group B winner Croatia in Vienna. The Turks finished second to Portugal in Group A. The winner faces Germany in the semifinals next week.
QUOTABLE
“There is always something left. Everything is possible in football. We can battle.”—Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger after setting up two goals and scoring one in a 3-2 quarterfinal win over Portugal.
